New enterprises outnumbered those that died across the EU in 2024, although the pattern varied between member states, Eurostat figures show.

The EU recorded 3.5 million enterprise births in 2024, compared with 3.1 million enterprise deaths, Eurostat reported. It counted 34 million enterprises overall. The birth rate was 10.4%, while the preliminary death rate was 9.2%. [1]
Births exceeded deaths in 19 of the EU’s 27 member states. The reverse was true in Bulgaria, Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Ireland, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia. Lithuania had the highest enterprise birth rate, at 17.5%, and Austria the lowest, at 6.3%. Estonia had the highest preliminary death rate, at 29.2%. [1]
Eurostat also counted 180,200 high-growth enterprises in 2024. These employed 14.1 million people and made up 10% of EU enterprises with at least 10 employees. The classification is based on employee growth of more than 10% a year over three years. [1]
