BBC Weather says no hurricane had formed in the North Atlantic by 2 October. September, usually the busiest month, was the first September in more than 30 years without one. It was also the latest point in a season without an Atlantic hurricane since satellite-era records began. Four named tropical storms did form in September: Edouard, Fay, Gonzalo and Hanna. [1]
BBC weather presenter Simon King identifies El Niño as the main reason for the quiet season. El Niño can strengthen upper-level winds over the Atlantic, creating wind shear that disrupts developing storms. The BBC says the US National Hurricane Center saw no sign of tropical storm or hurricane activity over the following week, while Colorado State University forecasters expected below-normal activity over the next two weeks. [1]
The Atlantic hurricane season runs until 30 November. If it ends without a hurricane, it would be the first such season in the satellite era. The historical database records none in 1914, though storms could have gone unobserved before satellite monitoring. [1]
