Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam warned the UN General Assembly on 25 September that southern Lebanon could face a security vacuum if UNIFIL withdraws without an agreement on an international force to replace it. He called for a successor that would continue the mission’s monitoring, reporting and liaison work, L’Orient Today reported. [6]
The UN Security Council has extended UNIFIL’s mandate for a final time, until 31 December 2026. The mission is due to cease regular operations that day, then withdraw over the following year. The resolution allows it to carry out some security duties during the withdrawal and retain a limited guard presence while the mission is wound down. [3]
The UN secretary-general has put forward three options for a successor force, a House of Commons Library briefing says. France and Italy have pledged to work on post-UNIFIL plans, while the EU says its proposed training mission for Lebanon’s armed forces is not intended to replace UNIFIL. [7] [5] [4]
