Europe has recorded 1,569 locally acquired human cases of West Nile virus in 16 countries since spring, according to European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) figures cited by Nieuws.nl in an ANP/DPA report. The figures run through 23 September. [1]
Italy has the highest count, with about 696 cases, followed by Greece with 355 and Spain with 125. In the Netherlands, the public health agency RIVM announced 44 cases on 24 September; the ECDC figures still showed the earlier Dutch count of 28. [1]
By 23 September, this year’s European tally had passed the full-year totals cited for 2025, when 1,112 cases were recorded, and 2024, when there were 1,436. The highest annual count cited was 2,083 in 2018. [1]
