The Republic of Ireland postponed its pre-match news conference on Saturday morning, then delayed training too, ahead of Sunday’s Nations League match against Israel in Hungary. A Uefa official initially told waiting reporters that the 09:15 BST briefing would take place after training, but later said training had also been postponed. No new time was given for either event. Heimir Hallgrimsson’s side are scheduled to play Israel in Debrecen at 19:45 BST on Sunday, with a return match in Backa Topola, Serbia, on 4 October. The fixtures have prompted boycott calls from Irish Sport for Palestine’s “Stop The Game” campaign, backed by former manager Brian Kerr and former international James McClean. Some Irish supporters believe the match should go ahead with fans present. [1]
The players discussed both fixtures at a team meeting on Friday and were expected to make a statement at Saturday’s news conference, BBC Sport reported. [1]
Uefa gave no reason for the delays. BBC Sport reported that the news conference, originally planned for the stadium, was expected to move to the team hotel. [1]
