Lisa Nandy joined BT workers outside the Labour conference in Liverpool to protest against plans to shut the company’s Old Hall Street office and relocate about 600 jobs. The office is due to close in March 2027, when its lease expires. [1]
Nandy said she had discussed the proposal with BT and that the government wanted the jobs to stay in the Liverpool City Region. She also acknowledged what she described as significant cost pressures on the company. [1]
Carl Webb, a Communications Workers Union representative, warned that the loss of 600 jobs from Liverpool would have a substantial effect on the local economy. [1]
BT said it was working on options for affected staff to move to other offices in the north of England, including Manchester and Leeds. It said the proposed changes were part of a wider plan to bring staff together in fewer, better-equipped workplaces. [1]
BT said customers and services were not affected by the proposed changes. How many staff might relocate, and whether any redundancies would follow, remains unclear. [1]
