More than 138,000 people, including over 70,000 children, have been displaced in Yemen since the start of August, the UN said on 25 September, warning that humanitarian supplies are running low. [1]
Stéphane Dujarric, spokesperson for the UN secretary-general, described it as the highest level of new displacement since the 2022 truce. UNICEF separately reported nearly 130,000 people displaced over the preceding three weeks, including an estimated 71,000 children. [1] [2]
Some families are being uprooted repeatedly. The New Humanitarian reported that Hafedhaa Murshed and her family fled again after clashes broke out near their displacement site in western Taiz on 3 September. She had spent more than five years there with her husband and seven children. [7]
UNICEF’s Yemen representative, Akhil Iyer, said mobile nutrition teams had screened nearly 2,900 children in recent weeks in areas they could safely reach. More than one in four of those screened were acutely malnourished, and over 200 had severe acute malnutrition. [2]
The latest fighting comes on top of an existing nutrition crisis. Even before the escalation, more than 2.2 million children under five were projected to suffer acute malnutrition during 2026, including over half a million severe cases, UNICEF said. [2]
Education has also been disrupted: 243 schools had closed or suspended learning in recent weeks, affecting more than 137,000 students, the agency reported. [2]
The World Health Organization said around 60% of the 5,415 health service delivery units it assessed were fully functioning. Full trauma care was available at only 6% of assessed facilities. [3]

WHO delivered surgical supplies, essential commodities and antibiotics to four hospitals between 13 and 17 September. But after three emergency dispatches, its Aden warehouse had run out of normal saline and sterile surgical gloves, among other supplies. Trauma and emergency surgery kits and anaesthetic drugs also remained unavailable, it said. [3]
Nearly 3,000 pregnant women among the displaced had limited or no access to life-saving care, Dujarric said, with some 200 expected to give birth during September. He said the UN and its humanitarian partners had reached 100,000 people since 1 August, but needed additional funding and safe, sustained access. [1]
The UK announced £10 million for the UN’s emergency appeal on 25 September: £5.5 million for the World Food Programme, £3.5 million for UNICEF and £1 million for the International Organization for Migration. The package is part of an existing £104 million aid allocation for Yemen, rather than additional funding beyond it. [6]
