Redaktionelle IllustrationTrump says he eliminated Iran’s nuclear threat in one night. His earlier four-to-six-week estimate covered a wider military mission, while inspectors still lacked an account of Iran’s enriched uranium in September.

In a Truth Social post on 1 October 2026, President Donald Trump said he had repeatedly predicted it would take four to six weeks to eliminate Iran’s nuclear threat, but had done it “in one night”. He said the remaining time was needed only to keep it that way. The post did not identify the night, an operation or what would count as eliminating the threat. [1]
Trump did give a four-to-six-week estimate on 26 March, but he described it as the time needed to achieve the mission of Operation Epic Fury, not solely a nuclear objective. On 2 March, he had projected four to five weeks for a campaign whose stated aims included destroying Iran’s missiles and navy, preventing it from obtaining a nuclear weapon and ending its support for armed groups abroad. He said then that the operation could last longer. [7] [4]
There is evidence of serious damage. In prepared remarks published on 18 March, US intelligence director Tulsi Gabbard assessed that an earlier operation, Midnight Hammer, had obliterated Iran’s enrichment programme and that Iran had not tried to rebuild that capability since. She said US intelligence was continuing to watch for any decision to authorise a nuclear weapons programme. Trump had himself claimed on 2 March that Midnight Hammer had destroyed Iran’s nuclear programme, while accusing Iran of continuing to pursue nuclear weapons. [5] [4]
Destroyed enrichment capacity, however, is narrower than an end to every nuclear risk. The International Atomic Energy Agency estimated that Iran held 440.9kg of uranium enriched to up to 60% as of 13 June 2025. By September 2026, it could not determine the current size, composition or whereabouts of Iran’s enriched-uranium stockpile, or whether enrichment had stopped, because it lacked the necessary information and access. Its director general called the gap a serious proliferation concern. That uncertainty is not evidence that Iran has a weapon or has resumed enrichment. [2] [3]

The chronology also matters: the IAEA records US attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities in June 2025 and further US-Israeli attacks in February 2026. Its September account describes both interruptions following attacks and restrictions on Iranian cooperation, some of which predated them. The October post does not say which attack, if either, Trump meant by “one night”. [2]
In a TIME interview conducted on 28 September and published earlier on 1 October, Trump blamed the press for the public’s four-to-six-week expectation, but acknowledged that he had said the US would be there for a short time and had then chosen to go further. Separately, he told reporters that presenting the war as preventing an Iranian nuclear weapon could help Republicans in November’s elections. [6] [9]
Trump also told TIME that intensified bombing after the 3 November elections was “possible”. On 1 October, the Associated Press reported that ships carrying more than 7,000 sailors and 2,000 Marines were heading to the Middle East, citing a US official. Military decisions about Iran therefore remain active even as Trump describes the nuclear threat as eliminated. [6] [9]
