The United States and China have agreed to establish a communication channel for incidents involving emerging AI technology, the White House announced after talks between Presidents Donald Trump and Xi Jinping. The aim is to give the two governments a way to contact each other when an incident occurs. [1]
The White House said the leaders had chosen the term “super intelligence” to describe the technologies concerned. It also announced a separate US–China dialogue on risks and benefits, with its next exchange due by November. That timetable applies to the dialogue, not to the incident channel. [1]
Before the leaders’ talks, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told CNBC that Washington wanted an incident line to maintain contact, especially during an incident. He said the countries needed to discuss protocols and the main dangers they would address, citing uncontrollable agents and risks involving non-state actors. [7]
China’s commerce ministry said the countries had held an AI discussion within their economic and trade consultation mechanism. Asked about an emergency contact channel on 24 September, a foreign ministry spokesperson referred the question to other Chinese authorities. No launch date or operating procedures for the channel have been made public. [2] [3] [1]
