A 28-year-old British climber died after falling about 60 metres into a gully while descending Torrecerredo in northern Spain on Thursday 24 September, the BBC reported, citing the Spanish Civil Guard. [1]
The accident happened on the mountain’s eastern side, in Cabrales, about 20 metres from the summit, local newspaper El Fielato y El Nora reported, also citing the Civil Guard. [3]
Asturias emergency service SEPA received the alert at 13:27 local time. The caller reported a fall of between 40 and 60 metres. A rescue doctor confirmed the man’s death at 14:18, and rescuers remained with his body until a Civil Guard helicopter carrying mountain-rescue specialists arrived at 15:28. [2]
Specialist rescuers recovered the man’s body and belongings. His body was flown to La Morgal, where funeral services were waiting. [1] [2]
Torrecerredo rises to 2,649 metres and is the highest peak in Asturias and the Cantabrian Mountains. The regional tourism organisation classifies its ascent route as very difficult and warns that the steep, exposed descent from the summit requires particular care. [4]
The climber’s name has not been released. The UK Foreign Office said it was in contact with local authorities following reports of a British national’s death in Spain, the BBC reported. [1]
