Pope Leo XIV warned of the risks artificial intelligence poses to humanity in Paris on 25 September 2026, calling for urgent education in ethical judgement. He was addressing authorities, civil society representatives and diplomats at the Élysée Palace at the start of his visit to France. [1]
“If we are to avoid losing our humanity amid a ‘paradise of machines’ invading and conditioning our daily lives, there is an urgent need for education in ethical discernment and the capacity to acknowledge the moral good,” he said in the address published by the Holy See. [1]
Leo said he had addressed AI in his first encyclical with the aim of putting the human person at the centre of reflection. He linked his ethical appeal to respect for people’s inner freedom and dignity. [1]
He also credited technological development with improving living conditions, while warning that its tools could cause harm if they were not directed towards the good. [1]
In a second address that day at UNESCO’s Paris headquarters, Leo said new technologies must serve people rather than become instruments of “domination and injustice”, The Guardian reported. [2]
