The Dutch climate minister says planned permit withdrawals for two Tata Steel plants have complicated negotiations over an agreement to make its operations more sustainable.

The Dutch government and Tata Steel have moved the deadline for reaching a sustainability agreement to March 2027. Climate Minister Stientje van Veldhoven announced the extension on 25 September, ANP reported. [1]
Van Veldhoven said the main reason was a plan by the Omgevingsdienst Noordzeekanaalgebied environmental authority to withdraw permits for Tata Steel’s two coke-gas plants. She said this added complexity to already difficult negotiations, making more time necessary. [1]
A preliminary agreement reached by the government and Tata Steel in 2025 envisaged closing one of the plants during 2029, with the second to follow later. Tata Steel has also said it wants to bring the closures forward, ANP reported. [1]
It remains unclear when the plants would have to stop operating as a result of the environmental authority’s intervention. The permit withdrawal is planned, rather than already completed. [1]
The cabinet has pledged up to €2 billion towards the agreement. Van Veldhoven said the government was sticking to that amount. [1]
