We process your email address, account and security records, chosen profile name, comments, likes, saved articles, followed topics, preferences and credits to provide the functions you request. Account services are based on performance of our agreement with you; security, abuse prevention, moderation and handling correspondence are based on our legitimate interests in a safe and accountable publication. Legal obligations apply where relevant. Required fields are identified in the relevant form; without necessary account details we cannot provide account functions.
Your profile name, visible comments, their date and public contributions can be read by other readers. Email addresses, private questions, reports and notifications are not public. Do not include sensitive personal information in a public contribution.
OpenAI processes submitted questions or comments and relevant article and conversation context for the article assistant and moderation. A displayed name and personal information you put in the text may be included. AI can be wrong. Automated moderation can hold or hide a comment; you may request human reconsideration through the comment or using the contact details below. The automated moderator does not itself ban accounts.
Journalistic research also uses public statements, documents and source material, including material about identifiable people. We weigh the public interest, freedom of expression and privacy; journalistic exceptions apply only where legally applicable. A public source is not a general exemption from privacy obligations.
Necessary session storage keeps you signed in. The browser also remembers language, region, display and privacy preferences. Optional interaction measurement is off until you agree, and you can withdraw consent in Privacy choices. Advertising tracking is disabled.
Basic pageview counts use aggregate totals without a measurement cookie, account, IP address or persistent visitor identifier in our counting database. Hosting and security providers may separately process technical logs, including IP addresses. Optional reading history remains in this browser, holds at most 100 entries and expires after 30 days, with cleanup on next use. Other people using the same browser may see it, including after sign-out.
We use Supabase for accounts, database and file storage; OpenAI Sites and Cloudflare for hosting and security; Resend for email; OpenAI for AI functions; and Firecrawl for retrieving public research sources. Suppliers receive data needed for their role. Where purchases are available, Stripe handles payment details; we retain order, payment-reference and credit records, not full card details. We do not sell personal data.
A supplier or subprocessor may process data outside the European Economic Area, including in the United States. Transfers require an applicable adequacy decision or appropriate safeguards, such as standard contractual clauses and any necessary supplementary measures. Contact us for information about the safeguards applicable to your data.
Account data and private settings are kept while needed to provide your account; removal requests are handled manually. Visible contributions may remain part of the discussion or journalistic archive. We assess removal or anonymisation against privacy rights, the context of the discussion and freedom of expression. Deleting a comment removes its active text, not necessarily replies or restricted audit records.
We retain correspondence, moderation records, research evidence and financial records only as needed for their purpose, an applicable legal duty or a substantiated dispute. Editorial archives may remain available for journalistic accountability. Financial records subject to Dutch retention requirements are normally retained for seven years, or longer where the law requires it. There is no automatic promise to erase all provider logs or backups immediately. Backup copies follow the supplier retention cycle and are restricted to recovery and security.
Pageview deduplication records expire after 48 hours and are removed at the next hourly cleanup. Aggregate counts do not identify a reader and may be retained. Consent withdrawal stops future optional measurement; it does not retrospectively erase lawfully processed data.
Subject to applicable conditions, you can request access, correction, erasure, restriction, portability or object to processing. You can withdraw consent without affecting earlier lawful processing. Contact us using the details below; send no password, authentication code or identity-document copy unsolicited. We may request proportionate verification.
We respond to privacy-rights requests within one month. If a lawful extension is necessary, we explain the reason and extension within that month. Some information may be retained for legal obligations, legal claims or protected journalism; we explain any refusal. You may complain to the Dutch Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens or another competent supervisory authority. The account export covers available reader data, not every internal record or backup.
The date above identifies this version. Material changes to purposes or optional processing are explained before they take effect; new consent is requested where required.
To limit repeated starter bonuses, signed-in readers receive a security cookie with a random browser code, valid for one year. We keep restricted, keyed hashes of email and browser identifiers used for the offer. These are used only to prevent abuse, not for advertising or reading behaviour. Bonus records may remain after account deletion for as long as this one-time offer runs. You may request human review of an incorrect refusal, including a shared-browser case, at contact@newsmadeclear.com.
We count views of public pages and articles even if you decline additional measurement. We retain only totals per public page and calendar day, and hourly totals for article popularity, without measurement cookies, visitor or session identifiers, IP history, search terms or individual reading profiles. Our purpose is to understand usage and improve the site; we rely on our legitimate interest for this limited first-party use.
All readers count, including the owner. We do not read account information for baseline counting. Admin pages and recognised bots are excluded. These totals are views, not unique people.
A random number for each view prevents duplicate processing. It exists only in page memory; on the server it is separate from pages and people and is deleted after 48 hours at the next hourly cleanup. Additional usage measurement and Google Analytics each remain subject to your consent.
Google Analytics is off until you agree separately. Google receives a random cookie identifier, public page addresses and titles, the referring website’s domain and technical browser data. We send no account IDs, email addresses, comments or search terms. Only our fixed campaign codes and public article IDs are retained from URL parameters to measure visits through shared links. Advertising signals are disabled. Measurement cookies expire after one year; withdrawal stops collection and removes them.
Google Analytics reports cover consenting browsers. They are not a verified count of unique people, and visits before activation cannot be reconstructed.
