Cristiano Ronaldo has been handed a 30-day suspension by the Portuguese Football Federation after leaving the national team’s camp in September, following a disciplinary ruling that also fined him €255 (£189). [1]
The federation’s disciplinary council upheld the charge against the Portugal captain in full on Monday. It has not been made clear which matches or activities the suspension covers, or whether time served under a provisional suspension will count towards the sanction. [1]
Ronaldo left Portugal’s Nations League squad after being an unused substitute against Norway and learning he would not start against Denmark. He said he had left because coach Jorge Jesus had twice “broken his word”, describing the situation as an “absolute breach of trust”. Jesus denied making an agreement with him. [1]
Ronaldo, who was provisionally suspended on 9 October, accepted responsibility and apologised to his team-mates and fans, saying he deserved to be punished. Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença told Record there was a “strong desire” to have him back in the national team once the matter was resolved. [1]
The 41-year-old has scored 146 goals in 234 appearances for Portugal, both men’s international records, and helped the side win Euro 2016 and the Nations League twice. [1]
