Dutch retail turnover rose by 2.7% in September year on year, as growth in non-food and online sales outweighed a fall in the food sector.
Review information is loading.
Dutch retail turnover rose by 2.7% in September compared with a year earlier, but the increase was driven by non-food shops and online sales as supermarkets reported a decline, Statistics Netherlands (CBS) says.
The volume of goods sold, which excludes price changes, was up 1.8%. Turnover in non-food shops increased by 4.6%, while food-sector turnover fell by 0.5%. The figures are adjusted for the number of shopping days; without that adjustment, total turnover was 3.3% higher than in September 2025.
Supermarket turnover fell by 1%, and the volume sold was down 0.2%. Turnover at specialist food shops rose by 3.1%.
Within non-food retail, shops selling leisure goods recorded the largest increase, at 7.9%. Drugstores were up 6.4%. Furniture and home-furnishing shops were the only non-food category listed by CBS with lower turnover, down 0.3%.
Online turnover rose by 4.5% year on year. Webshops, whose main business is selling online, were up 5%; online sales by multichannel retailers, which also sell through other channels, increased by 3.7%.
CBS says the figures are provisional and may be revised.
