Texas governor-elect Gina Hinojosa says she plans to introduce legislation to protect residents from the effects of data centres and wants the state to halt its current approach to their development until those safeguards are in place.
“We are going to introduce legislation to protect the people of Texas, and we need to stop the current way of doing business around data centres until that protection is there,” she told CNN, according to ANP.
During her campaign, Hinojosa pledged to stop development of new data centres. She said she did not oppose the facilities themselves, but objected to what she described as their exploitation of Texas, adding that this would end when she became governor.
The report does not specify what protections or restrictions her proposed legislation would contain.
