Tallon Griekspoor says his latest ATP title, won at the European Open in Brussels, is “perhaps the sweetest” of his four, after a difficult period that had left him considering whether to stop playing for the season.
The Dutchman came from a set down to beat Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff 4–6, 6–3, 6–4 in Sunday’s final. He said the win followed a spell in which he had questioned continuing after the Shanghai tournament, but felt there was still more in him.
Griekspoor, 30, has also won titles in Pune, Den Bosch and Mallorca. He described each as special for different reasons, saying the Brussels victory stood out because it came after a particularly hard period.
There will be little time to celebrate: Griekspoor said his flight to Vienna was scheduled for 9am the following morning, ahead of a first-round match on Tuesday. “Within 48 hours, you’re playing again,” he said.
He also defended the visible emotion he showed during the final, including throwing a racket and gesturing towards his team. “It’s a bit of passion,” he said, adding that he did not play as he wanted to when he showed no emotion. Griekspoor earned €110,000 for winning the tournament.
