The Batavia is back in Lelystad after being fitted with a steel support structure in Amsterdam, ahead of years of maintenance beside its museum home.

The Batavia, a replica of a 17th-century Dutch East India Company ship, returned to Lelystad from Amsterdam on Thursday afternoon, a Museum Batavialand spokesperson told the ANP news agency. In Amsterdam, the wooden vessel was placed in a steel support structure intended to protect it. [1]
The ship is due to be placed on a concrete foundation directly beside Museum Batavialand, more than eight metres above its former position in the water. It will be left to dry and undergo targeted maintenance over the coming years, with visitors able to follow the work. [1]
The replica was built in Lelystad between 1985 and 1995 as a training and employment project. It reconstructs an East Indiaman dating from 1628; the original was wrecked on its first voyage a year later. [1]
