Taiwan plans to add AI servers and advanced semiconductors to its export-control list, bringing its rules closer to those of the United States. The proposed controls could make unauthorised shipments to China a criminal offence, though no start date has been announced.

Taiwan is preparing to tighten controls on exports of AI servers and advanced semiconductors to China, with unauthorised shipments potentially becoming a criminal offence. The proposed measures are intended to bring Taiwan’s rules closer to US policy, according to Taiwan’s economy minister, Kung Ming-hsin, in an interview with Bloomberg reported by ANP. [1]
Kung said Taiwan planned to add the goods to its list of controlled exports, but did not give a timetable. He linked the move to commitments made under a trade agreement Taiwan and the United States concluded earlier this year.
The source report says Taiwan does not currently treat the unauthorised export of AI chips to China as a crime. The United States has long restricted sales of some Nvidia and AMD AI chips to China. US officials have alleged that billions of dollars’ worth of Nvidia hardware has nevertheless reached the country in recent years, including through a sophisticated black market, according to the report.
