South West Water has been fined £7,867,733 after pleading guilty to 18 charges arising from pollution incidents in Cornwall and Devon between 2015 and 2021. The case followed an Environment Agency investigation into incidents in Bodmin, Harlyn, Playing Place and Polperro in Cornwall, and Plymouth in Devon. The guilty pleas were entered at Plymouth Magistrates’ Court. [1]
Seventeen charges concerned illegal discharge activities, including sewage discharges. The remaining charge concerned a failure to take reasonable remedial measures after a sewage pumping station failed. [1]
South West Water apologised, describing the case as historical. It said most of the spills involved overflows used during storm conditions, and that it had made improvements at the affected sites. The company also said it was investing £760m to tackle storm overflows and claimed spills had fallen by 17% in the last year. [1]
