Dutch police will reimburse a Spanish photographer for equipment after the photographer was pushed into water during a police operation at the Malieveld in The Hague. A police spokesperson confirmed the commitment to news agency ANP following coverage by regional broadcaster Omroep West. [1]
The incident happened on Saturday. ANP described footage circulated during riots at the Malieveld as showing a police officer pushing the photographer into the water. [1]
Police had previously explained the push as an attempt to make room for an arrest unit. A spokesperson described the operation as intense and said officers had needed to act quickly. [1]
The spokesperson suggested that the officer might not have noticed the water behind the photographer. She stressed that this was not meant to excuse the journalist ending up in the water, and said that outcome had never been intended. [1]
The compensation amount has not been disclosed. The police spokesperson told Omroep West that the force would not reveal the sum for privacy reasons. [1]
