Dutch hockey player Pien Sanders has retired from the national team after ten years, ending a spell in which she won two Olympic gold medals and a world title.
The 28-year-old Den Bosch player announced her decision on social media on Tuesday. “It has been wonderful,” she wrote. “I have had ten amazing years in the most beautiful shirt there is.” [1]
Sanders won Olympic gold at Tokyo 2020, held in 2021, and at Paris 2024. She was also part of the Netherlands team that won the 2022 World Cup and claimed four European titles, including one in her debut year, 2017. [1]
The Dutch team lost the World Cup final to Argentina on home soil this summer. Sanders said she was grateful to have fulfilled the dreams she had as a young girl, adding: “But it is time for new things.” [1]
