Greek minister Thanos Plevris wants an option to pause asylum procedures during sudden increases in arrivals, as EU ministers discuss possible emergency measures.

Speaking before a meeting of EU asylum and migration ministers in Luxembourg, Plevris said Greece wanted the option to temporarily suspend asylum procedures when unexpectedly large numbers of people seeking asylum arrive. He pointed to the situation in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta as a reason for being able to act quickly. [1]
The European Commission wants emergency measures to be available in similar circumstances, ANP reported. Ministers were due to discuss on Thursday what those measures should be. [1]
EU leaders are expected to discuss a concrete proposal later in October, but it has yet to be drafted. Greece’s request is for a possible emergency measure, not a change already in force. [1]
