Fortuna Sittard knocked Sparta Rotterdam out of the KNVB Cup after winning a penalty shoot-out, following a 2-2 draw after extra time in the first-round tie at Sparta’s home ground.
Sparta took the lead in the 15th minute when Milan Zonneveld headed in Isaac Babadi’s cross. Fortuna replied after half-time: Kristoffer Peterson volleyed home in the 62nd minute, then Lequincio Zeefuik chipped Sparta goalkeeper Filip Bednarek to put the visitors ahead.
Zonneveld headed in his second goal in the 90th minute to force extra time, but neither side scored again. The shoot-out was decided when Sparta’s Andrej Kostić had to retake his first successful penalty and missed his second attempt, giving Fortuna the win.
