Speaking to UN observers in Islamabad, António Guterres praised their contribution to regional stability and referred to their work in May 2025.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres addressed personnel from the UN Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) at a town hall in Islamabad on 6 October. He praised what he described as the group’s visible presence on both sides of the Line of Control and thanked its staff for contributing to regional stability. That assessment was his, rather than a measured finding about the mission’s impact. [1]
Guterres said the mission’s commitment had been on display in May 2025, but did not identify the events he meant. [1]
Guterres also told General Guardado, whom he identified as the mission’s head and chief military observer, that his assignment would end in December. He said this might be his final visit to a UN peacekeeping mission as Secretary-General. [1]
