Williams driver Carlos Sainz received a five-place grid penalty after qualifying for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix on 25 September 2026. The stewards also added two penalty points to his licence, taking his total to four over the rolling 12-month period. [2]
Sainz remains ninth in the final qualifying classification, but the penalty puts him 14th on the provisional starting grid in Baku. [3] [4]
The stewards found that single yellow flags were clearly visible after Turn 2 and on the approach to Turn 3, covering two consecutive marshalling sectors. Williams warned Sainz over the radio, and he acknowledged at the hearing that he knew about the flags. [2]
Their review of the telemetry showed that he reacted only in the second of those sectors. In the first, they found no meaningful reduction in speed attributable to the yellow flags; Sainz instead recorded his fastest time of the session through that section. [2]
Sainz told the stewards that he intended his slowing on the approach to and exit from Turn 3 to cover both yellow-flag sectors, rather than making a separate reduction on the straight. He also said the car that had triggered the flags had left the run-off area and that he expected the warnings to be withdrawn. [2]
The stewards rejected that interpretation. They said a driver must significantly reduce speed in each individual yellow-flag sector: slowing in a later one cannot satisfy the requirement for an earlier one. Compliance also cannot depend on a driver's own assessment of whether the original hazard remains. [2]
RacingNews365 highlighted the size of the setback, reporting the five-place drop and two licence points. The stewards’ ruling specifies that five grid places is the standard sanction under the penalty guidelines for this qualifying offence.

Earlier that day, Sainz received his second reprimand of the season for a separate yellow-flag breach in third practice. In that case, the stewards treated the short interval between the flag appearing and his arrival in the sector as a mitigating circumstance. [5]
