Thousands of pupils, students and teachers marched in Greece on Wednesday to demand more public funding for education, improved school facilities and less crowded classrooms. Police estimated that about 10,000 people joined a peaceful demonstration in Athens, with protests also held elsewhere in the country. [1]
The marchers gathered outside parliament, chanting: “From Greece to France. We want public, free education.” They also voiced support for protests in France and other parts of Europe over the rising cost of living and conditions in education. [1]
Demonstrations took place in Thessaloniki, Greece’s second-largest city, and elsewhere. Some primary-school teachers went on strike. Education unions have long called for more funding for school buildings and additional staff. [1]
