More rain is forecast, but low river flows are disrupting freight traffic and restricting navigable depth.
Review information is loading.
Discharge in the Rhine and Meuse remains exceptionally low, even as rain becomes more likely in the Netherlands and the rivers’ catchment areas, according to a Rijkswaterstaat drought monitor updated on Tuesday and reported by ANP. [1]
Little rain fell in the Netherlands during the preceding week, when temperatures were higher than usual for the time of year. Groundwater levels across the country are also very low, ANP reported. It said the low river flows are affecting shipping, nature and water quality, without specifying the effects on nature or water quality. [1]
Low water levels on the Rhine and IJssel are disrupting shipping, with less freight moving to and from Germany than usual. Rijkswaterstaat says restrictions on navigable depth and long waits at locks will continue in the coming period. [1]
More rain is expected this autumn, when flows in the Rhine and Meuse are forecast to rise slightly. The report gives no figures or precise date for that expected increase. [1]
