More than 70,000 Dutch businesses still owe the tax authorities money from pandemic-era tax deferrals, with €1.9 billion outstanding, according to the Dutch Tax Administration. Around 25,000 businesses are behind on their repayment arrangements, and most with debts still open have 11 months left to pay.
About 400,000 businesses applied for special payment extensions during the pandemic. A major repayment scheme began in October 2022, when more than 266,000 businesses joined and the outstanding debt was about €20 billion. Most businesses have since repaid their debts in full.
Another 4,500 businesses paid off their remaining debt early in the past quarter. The Tax Administration says 73,000 businesses still owe money. Eligible businesses may be able to pause payments or extend their repayment period to as long as seven years.
