Dutch authorities and education institutions have agreed to use more publicly available software code and work together more closely on software.

The agreement covers the national government, provinces, municipalities and education institutions. They plan to use more software with publicly available source code and to cooperate more closely on software, the Ministry of Economic Affairs said, as reported by ANP. [1]
The aim is to make programs easier to modify, add to or replace when they do not work as intended. State Secretary Willemijn Aerdts, whose responsibilities include the digital economy and sovereignty, said open source was not always the easiest or cheapest option. She said it could give organisations more control over their systems, reduce their dependence on others and help them share solutions. [1]
The Ministry of Economic Affairs said other organisations would be able to join the agreement later. [1]
