British teenager Mika Stojsavljevic beat former Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 at the Hong Kong Open to secure her first WTA Tour main-draw victory, after learning only an hour before the match that she would play.
The 17-year-old entered the main draw as a lucky loser after losing in qualifying. Ranked 411th in the world, she is 224 places below Kenin, 27, who won the Australian Open in 2020.
“I only knew an hour before I was going to be playing. I kind of just went out and swung today,” Stojsavljevic said. She added that she believed in herself despite knowing Kenin was a Grand Slam champion.
Stojsavljevic, who won the US Open junior title in 2024, will face world number 67 Zeynep Sonmez in the second round. Fellow Briton Katie Boulter’s season ended with a 7-5, 6-4 defeat by American Claire Liu at the tournament.
