Mikaela Shiffrin says she plans to devote more attention to giant slalom and super-G this season, rather than focusing only on slalom. The American said the change reflects a shift in her motivation and could help extend her career.
Speaking in Sölden, Austria, ahead of the season’s first World Cup race, Shiffrin said she was looking forward to exploring the two disciplines. A giant slalom is scheduled there this weekend.
“For a long time I kept doing the same thing, and I was motivated to do that,” she said. “But over the past year, and after last season, my motivation has changed. I think I need to listen to that — to what my body and mind are telling me — and perhaps this will lead to a longer career in the sport.”
Shiffrin, 31, won Olympic gold in slalom for the second time last season and took nine of the ten slalom World Cup races, according to ANP.
