A police car was set on fire in Glasgow and fireworks were launched at emergency services as Bonfire Night disorder broke out in several parts of Scotland on Thursday evening, the BBC reports.
Police were called to Greenside Street in the Provanmill area of Glasgow at about 19:55 after reports of an injured man. Officers and ambulance crews were targeted with fireworks while attending. The emergency services withdrew from the area after the car was set alight, and police deployed specialist resources under Operation Amberlight. One man was arrested; inquiries are continuing.
In Edinburgh’s Oxgangs area, fireworks were thrown towards officers, who were not injured. Police Scotland said it had received reports of young people blocking Oxgangs Road North at about 17:30. Several small fires in bins and a park were extinguished by firefighters, the force said.
The BBC also reported fireworks thrown at a fire appliance in Glasgow’s Knightswood area and attacks on fire crews in Castlemilk, Whitburn and Cumnock. In Dundee, a public order unit was sent after more than 100 young people gathered and a fire was lit in the road. A 15-year-old was taken to hospital in Alexandria after a firework exploded and injured his eye.
Police Scotland chief constable Jo Farrell said the force had “no tolerance” for violence and warned that those involved could face arrest and legal consequences. Police maintained a presence in the affected areas as inquiries continued.
