Jesús de Miguel’s family thanked supporters as the Tenerife forward’s funeral took place in his parents’ hometown of Navahermosa on Thursday. The family said the affection shown since his death had helped them remember “the mark he has left on so many people”.
The 30-year-old died in hospital on Tuesday after suffering a serious injury in a collision with FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono during a Spanish second-division match on Monday. Owono was sent off and the match was abandoned.
In a statement issued by De Miguel’s agent, Manuel Hernández, the family said: “Jesus leaves a void that is impossible to fill, but also cherished memories for all of us who were fortunate enough to share our lives with him.” They also asked for privacy as they grieve.
Spain coach Luis de la Fuente, Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez and Atlético Madrid chief executive Miguel Ángel Gil Marín were among those attending the funeral. Tenerife players carried the coffin.
The Spanish footballers’ union, AFE, called on Thursday for all matches this weekend to be postponed, saying players believed the circumstances did not allow competition to continue normally. Tenerife’s match at Granada and Andorra’s game against Mallorca have already been postponed; several midweek cup fixtures were also called off. Spanish teams in European competitions played this week.
De Miguel joined Tenerife in 2025. Tributes across European football followed his death.
