Stomach-massage videos presented as ‘lymphatic drainage’ promise a flatter-looking waist and relief from bloating. The distinction is between a temporary change in how someone looks or feels and a treatment for a diagnosed condition. [1] [2]
In a BBC News report published on 1 October, TikTok creator Abbey Alexandra describes using body oil and a wooden roller on her stomach. She says the routine leaves her feeling less puffy and acknowledges that the visible difference is temporary. Alexandra has endometriosis, which she says causes her bloating. [1]
The NHS describes manual lymphatic drainage as one part of care for lymphoedema, alongside compression, skin care and exercise. Bloating can have other causes, including intestinal gas; NHS advice also suggests stomach massage to release trapped wind. Feeling less bloated after a massage does not, by itself, show that lymph drainage caused the relief. [2] [7]
A 2022 trial involving 194 people with breast cancer-related lymphoedema found no clinically important added benefit from drainage alongside other treatment. An earlier review found a possible additional reduction in swelling in two smaller trials. Neither result tests the abdominal beauty routine. Small cosmetic studies have recorded changes in hip circumference or abdominal skinfold measurements, but without an untreated or sham group, those changes cannot be attributed specifically to massage. Dr Xand van Tulleken told the BBC that massage can be relaxing and may briefly reduce swelling, but said it does not promote fat loss. Cleveland Clinic advises asking a healthcare provider before trying lymphatic massage at home and says people with blood clots or infections should avoid it. [1] [9]
