Welsh first minister and Plaid Cymru leader Rhun ap Iorwerth has written to Prime Minister Andy Burnham seeking a “new deal for Wales” ahead of his first party conference speech since taking office. BBC Wales reported seeing the letter, sent on Thursday. [1]
Ap Iorwerth is asking for powers over policing and justice, rail infrastructure and the Crown Estate to be transferred to Wales. He also wants funding arrangements that he describes as fair and based on need. The requests put further devolution and funding at the centre of his approach to the UK government. [1]
He is due to address Plaid Cymru members in Llandudno on Friday, where he is expected to argue that Wales should have access to constitutional and fiscal tools already available in Scotland. Plaid took power for the first time in May, ending 27 years of Labour government in Wales. Ap Iorwerth leads a minority administration and needs opposition support to pass laws and budgets. [1]
Burnham has previously said he was open to Welsh government control over policing and would give proposals from the Welsh first minister a fair hearing. Those remarks came before this letter. [1]
