Nearly a quarter of weddings recorded in Scotland in 2025 involved two non-residents, and more than half of those took place in Gretna Green.

BBC News reports, citing National Records of Scotland, that neither partner was a Scottish resident in 6,596 of the 27,191 weddings recorded in Scotland in 2025. That is about 24% of the total. Gretna Green accounted for 3,492 of those weddings involving two non-residents — more than half. [1]
Among the couples interviewed by the BBC were Patryk and Angelika, who travelled from north-west England to marry in Gretna Green. They said its long wedding tradition appealed to them. [1]
Hayden and Savannah, from Pennsylvania, chose a castle near Edinburgh. Savannah cited the countryside and history, while Hayden said they wanted to take their family on an adventure. [1]
