Romania’s parliament has rejected a third candidate for prime minister, prolonging the political impasse that followed the Social Democrats’ departure from the governing coalition in May. Liberal MEP Siegfried Mureșan, nominated by President Nicușor Dan after two earlier candidates failed, did not secure enough votes, ANP and AFP reported in a dispatch carried by Nieuws.nl. [1]
After three unsuccessful votes, Dan may call an early election, according to the dispatch. [1]
The far-right opposition has demanded an election, but Dan has previously said he believes a vote would prolong the crisis. Unnamed observers cited in the dispatch expect him to put forward a fourth candidate, possibly a technocrat. [1]
