The Czech Republic’s governing ANO party failed to win any of the Senate seats contested on Saturday, in a setback Prime Minister Andrej Babiš called “catastrophic”. The main opposition parties won most of the votes, according to Nieuws.nl, which attributed its report to CTK and Reuters [1].
About a third of the Senate’s seats were up for election. The vote was the first major electoral test for ANO since it came to power last year in a coalition with other right-wing and far-right parties.
The result is unlikely to threaten the coalition, the report said. The lower house remains the country’s main legislative body and can override Senate vetoes.
Since taking office, Babiš’s government has ended direct military aid from the Czech state to Ukraine and criticised the European Union’s climate policies, according to the report [1].
