Three Dutch inspectorates are calling for an urgent plan for juvenile justice institutions, warning that staff shortages are affecting safety, care and treatment.

The Inspectorate of Justice and Security, the Inspectorate of Education and the Health and Youth Care Inspectorate made the appeal in a letter to the state secretary for Justice and Security on Monday, ANP reported. They want a short-term action plan to ensure juvenile justice institutions can provide safe, responsible accommodation and appropriate treatment. [1]
The inspectors say staff shortages have put the safety of young people and employees under sustained, serious pressure. They also warn that care and treatment are being progressively scaled back. [1]
About 450 young people who have been convicted of, or are suspected of, a criminal offence live in the institutions, where education and treatment are central rather than punishment. [1]
Elske van Amelsfort, a chief inspector at the Inspectorate of Justice and Security, said the resocialisation of young people in the institutions was coming under increasing pressure. [1]
