A gunman killed six people and wounded 15 in Kraków’s Main Square on Saturday, with police saying the 24-year-old Polish suspect acted alone. The shooting took place in a busy central area popular with visitors.
Police said the death toll rose from five to six. The victims were four women and two men. Two police officers were among the wounded, one of them seriously, Poland’s interior minister said.
The suspect was shot and wounded during an exchange of gunfire with officers, then taken to hospital for surgery. Police said he was wearing military-style clothing and a bulletproof vest, and had a long gun. Officers found other weapons and ammunition in his car.
Kraków police spokesperson Katarzyna Cisło said the gunman drove around the square firing at people, leaving casualties at several locations. She said he continued shooting at police after he had been hit. Police described the suspect as acting alone and said the public was safe.
It was not immediately clear whether the weapons used or found in the car were legally owned. Police have not identified a motive.
Several horse-carriage drivers were seriously injured in Saturday’s shooting in Kraków, according to their trade association. At least six people were killed and 16 others injured in the attack on a crowded square in the Polish city’s historic centre, Nieuws.nl reported, citing ANP and DPA.
The association said the horses sustained only minor injuries. One of its officials told Poland’s PAP news agency that two drivers were fighting for their lives and several others had suffered serious injuries.
Police shot and seriously wounded the gunman, the report said. Authorities later found three more bodies at the Polish man’s home and declared two days of national mourning.
