Newcastle United manager Matthias Jaissle says he understands supporters’ anger after a 1-0 home defeat by Everton brought boos at St James’ Park and left his side with four losses in six Premier League matches.
The result followed a midweek Carabao Cup defeat by Everton. Newcastle are 11th with 11 points from nine league games, and face Fulham away on Saturday before the international break.
Everton scored when goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek allowed a routine shot to slip under him, leaving Thierno Barry to tap in. Substitute Jacob Ramsey was sent off, while Newcastle managed only two shots on target from 17 attempts.
“After a performance like that I can understand the reaction from the fans,” Jaissle said. “That’s the reality and I am responsible for that.” He said the side had not been brave enough in possession and had played too many long balls.
The defeat extends a run of poor home results: Newcastle have lost seven league matches at home in 2026, more than any other Premier League side, and have gone 14 home league games without a clean sheet, a club record. They have conceded first in 16 of their past 18 league defeats and scored once from their last 47 shots in all competitions, according to BBC Sport.
Newcastle have scored 12 goals in nine league games and faced more shots than any other side this season. Captain Dan Burn said the team were “not ruthless enough going forward or defending our own box”, adding that he could sense nervousness among supporters.
Former Liverpool and England defender Jamie Carragher said on Sky Sports that he feared for Newcastle, pointing to the combination of a young manager and young players. The club are in a period of transition after Eddie Howe’s departure and the summer exits of key players including Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimarães.
Jaissle, who arrived in the summer on a four-year contract, said Newcastle needed to respond as a unit. “The only way is togetherness and showing unity,” he said.
