Brewers win first World Series title under former Netherlands coach Pat Murphy

The Milwaukee Brewers have won the World Series for the first time in the club’s history, beating the Tampa Bay Rays 4-1 in Game Five to clinch Major League Baseball’s best-of-seven championship series.

The decisive game was played at Milwaukee’s American Family Field overnight from Wednesday into Thursday. The Brewers, managed by Pat Murphy, won the series 4-1. Tampa Bay’s Richie Palacios, a Netherlands international, was on the losing side; the Rays have never won the World Series.

Murphy, 67, formerly coached the Netherlands national team. He was in charge when the Dutch beat Cuba at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, a victory described by Nieuws.nl as historic. His maternal grandmother was Dutch.

The Brewers had earlier taken a 1-0 lead against Tampa Bay in the opening game of the series, before sweeping the Los Angeles Dodgers in the play-off semi-final to reach the final for the first time in 44 years.
