Jean P. Bernardini of Brazil took up his post as the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Uruguay on 1 November, following an appointment by Secretary-General António Guterres, the UN said. The host government approved the appointment.
Bernardini has worked across the UN system for two decades, according to the organisation. Before the Uruguay posting, he led work on UN reforms in the Secretary-General’s Executive Office, advising senior officials and coordinating changes to the UN development system.
His earlier assignments included roles in UN headquarters and field offices, as well as in the Resident Coordinator’s offices in Brazil and Haiti. The UN said his work covered strategic planning, partnerships and development programmes in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Bernardini succeeds Pablo Ruiz Hiebra, who was appointed UN Resident Coordinator in Cuba after serving in Uruguay.
