BioWare is closing after more than three decades, and development of the next *Mass Effect* game is ending, the Canadian studio announced on 21 October. The closure brings an end to the developer behind *Baldur’s Gate*, *Dragon Age* and *Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic*; the planned new *Mass Effect* will not be released. BioWare said its immediate focus was on its team and supporting one another through the transition. It thanked players for helping bring its fictional worlds and characters to life.
The announcement follows reported cuts of about 400 jobs at Electronic Arts, BioWare’s parent company, including roughly 50 at the studio, according to the Associated Press. EA did not immediately respond to AP’s request for comment on the layoffs.
Founded in Canada in 1995, BioWare was acquired by EA in 2007. Its announcement said early development on the next *Mass Effect* project was ending.
