James “Jim” Copenhaver, who was wounded during the assassination attempt on Donald Trump at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, has died aged 76. He died in a Pittsburgh hospital on Wednesday 23 September 2026. His family’s lawyer, Joseph Feldman, said he was surrounded by loved ones. [4]
Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday attributed Copenhaver’s death to complications from his shooting wounds. The Allegheny County medical examiner told ABC News on Thursday, however, that the cause and manner of death were still pending. [7] [4]
Copenhaver was shot in the arm and abdomen during the attack on 13 July 2024. Fellow rallygoer Corey Comperatore was killed and David Dutch was wounded. Trump, then campaigning for a return to the presidency, was injured in the ear. The gunman, 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, was shot dead by a Secret Service sharpshooter. [1] [4]
A year after the shooting, Copenhaver told CBS that a bullet remained lodged near his spine and that he needed a cane to walk, the BBC reported. [1]
Copenhaver and his wife, Marianne, filed a federal lawsuit in June 2026. Associated Press reported that the suit alleged security failures by the Secret Service and Department of Homeland Security. The court docket lists the US Department of Justice as the defendant. [3] [5]
President Donald Trump paid tribute on Truth Social on Thursday, calling Copenhaver a “true American patriot” and offering condolences to his family, particularly his wife, Marianne.
