Students from Delhi University’s Miranda House marched with participants from other colleges on 28 September, calling for safer public spaces after an alleged gang-rape in the city, Jagran Josh reported. [5]
The case concerns a 17-year-old girl and an alleged assault at Aastha Kunj Park, near Kalkaji Mandir, on 21 September. Police said the three accused men had posed as officers, The Times of India reported. A magistrate remanded the men in judicial custody for 14 days on 24 September. [4]
The marchers called for working street lights on campus roads and in parks, proper public toilets and more frequent DTC shuttle buses. They sought improvements to public spaces rather than hostel curfews or restrictions on going out at night. [5]
At an earlier demonstration on 23 September, hundreds of students demanded better safety for women, Reuters reported. Some called for the freedom to go out at night without fear. Reuters also reported that local media had quoted the father of two men being questioned as saying his sons had been framed. [2]
Police searched parks and other public spaces on 22 and 23 September and said they were assessing lighting and fencing, with recommendations to be sent to civic agencies where needed.
