Fortuna Sittard continued their strong run in the Eredivisie with a narrow home win over Excelsior, as Rodrigo Guth headed in the decisive goal shortly before the final whistle. The victory lifted Danny Buijs’s side provisionally to fifth place.
The match looked set to finish goalless until substitute Mohamed Ihattaren delivered a corner that defender Guth met with a powerful header. Excelsior had earlier threatened through Irakli Yegoian, who shot wide when through on goal after a long pass from goalkeeper Stijn van Gassel.
Fortuna were without the ill Anthony Descotte, while striker Lequincio Zeefuik was not fit enough to play. Excelsior brought Noah Naujoks into the starting line-up after his recovery from injury.
