Iran’s judiciary announced on 30 September that Ali Hemmati Sistani and Majid Nikandish had been executed over alleged actions during January’s anti-government protests in Mashhad. Tasnim reported that the men were hanged after the Supreme Court upheld their death sentences. [2] [3]
The judicial account alleges that the men attacked and set fire to a shop, and stabbed two Basij militia members in the city’s Tabarsi district. It links the unrest there to the deaths of four security personnel. Iran International reported that the judiciary did not specify which of those deaths either man was accused of causing. [2] [3]
The Human Rights Activists News Agency said Nikandish had been sentenced to death for *moharebeh*, or “enmity against God”. It also said it had received information that he was subjected to forced confessions in detention. Tasnim’s account cites admissions attributed to the men and says lawyers attended their trial. The case follows protests that began over economic grievances in December and grew into nationwide anti-government demonstrations. Human Rights Watch and the Abdorrahman Boroumand Center counted 29 executions announced in connection with the protests between 18 March and the end of August; they said the charges in 16 of those cases included no allegation of killing.
