The pause follows scrutiny of civil servants’ contributions to BBC coverage; the broadcaster says its journalists and editors retain editorial control.

The BBC says it is pausing secondments of government statisticians to BBC Verify and reviewing their role after questions were raised about their involvement in news coverage. Statisticians already on placement will not be involved in publishing news or other content during the review, and recruitment for the next round will be paused, the broadcaster said. [1]
The decision follows a Telegraph report questioning the scheme’s impartiality. It quoted a now-removed blog in which a secondee said he had drafted short lines about population statistics that were incorporated into a BBC article. The BBC disputes the claim that secondees write copy. It says lines they write to explain a statistic may be incorporated into coverage, but that BBC journalists and editors make all editorial decisions. [4] [1]
A different secondee, Home Office statistician Nadyne Dunkley, described sending journalists summaries of statistical releases and checking drafts and charts for accuracy before publication in a 2024 blog. She called the summaries ‘filing copy’. Her account describes close involvement in producing coverage, but does not say she decided what was published. [3]
A Government Statistical Service advert for 2027 offered four three-month placements involving fact-checking, statistical analysis and briefings for journalists. It sought applicants with the ability to ‘influence decision making’, but listed that under required skills rather than giving secondees authority over editorial decisions. The application deadline was 16 October, before the BBC announced its pause. What will happen to those placements after the review remains unclear. [2] [1]
